Obituary

Virginia Ann Snyder Snider, 93, peacefully passed away at her home, surrounded by family, on February 12, 2025. She was born on June 4, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to Lena Kendall and Paul Homer Snyder. Virginia was baptized at the age of 12 at Englewood Christian Church. After graduating from Fenger High School in January 1949, she traveled by train the next day to Johnson City, Tennessee, to attend Milligan College. She majored in English and Religion, graduating in June 1953.

Virginia worked as a secretary for the Christian Church in Huntington, West Virginia, for one year. During her college years, her parents moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for health reasons, and Virginia spent her summers there. It was in Albuquerque that she met James D. Snider, who was stationed at Kirkland AFB. They married on July 12, 1954, after JD returned from Okinawa, Japan. They shared 61 wonderful years together.

Virginia's life as a military wife began when JD was stationed at Castle AFB in Merced, California, followed by postings at Richards-Gebaur AFB in Lee Summit, Missouri, and four years at Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska. Their final military assignment took them to Perrin AFB in Denison, Texas, where JD retired after 21 years of service. In 1958, they traveled the Alaskan Highway with their two children, Donnie and Diane, and in 1962, they made the same journey, this time with five children, including David, Dennis, and Dawn.

Virginia and JD made Denison their permanent home in 1962. Virginia devoted 23 years to teaching in the Denison ISD, instructing at Raynal, Layne, and Lamar Elementary schools. During her time teaching, she attended Austin College, East Texas State University, and Southeastern State University, earning a master's degree in education. She was especially proud of her work in special education at Lamar Elementary. After retirement, she enjoyed reconnecting with former students and celebrating their successes.

Along with JD, she traveled the world, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Her favorite destination was Garmisch, Germany, a place she was fortunate enough to visit with many of her grandchildren. Despite her love for teaching and traveling, Virginia cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often referred to as "Granny" by those closest to her.

Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, JD Snider, in December 2015, her parents, her sister Beverly Houston, and an infant daughter, Dannette Lynn. She is survived by three sons, Donnie (Cathy) Snider of Pottsboro, David (Robin) Snider of Howe, and Dennis (Connie) Snider of Van Alstyne; two daughters, Diane (Chris) Roberson of Humble and Dawn Snider of Tomball. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many nieces and friends.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to American Funeral Home in Denison, Texas. Visitation will be held on February 17 at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery in Denison
