"James (Jim) Luke Daniel

August 21, 1942 – October 10, 2025

James Luke Daniel, of Denison, Texas, passed away on October 10, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on August 21, 1942, in Walters, Oklahoma, to Lelon and Jessie (Hawkins) Daniel, James grew up in the heart of small-town life—where hard work, honesty, and kindness defined a man's worth. The third of five children, he quickly made a name for himself in Walters as a standout football player and an all-around good and dependable young man. Those who knew him in his early years remember his strength, quiet confidence, and genuine goodness—qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.

James graduated from Walters High School in 1960, where he met the love of his life, Betty Jo Washington. From the moment they met, it was clear their story would be one for the ages. The two married on December 7, 1962, and together built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. They made their home in Denison, Texas, where they raised two wonderful children and opened their hearts and doors to everyone around them.

A lifelong cowboy and true outdoorsman, James felt most at peace under an open sky. His work and adventures took him all across the country — from traveling wheat fields to helping build bowling alleys, to hunting trips that became stories retold for decades. Whether working with his quarter horses, spending time at the ballfields, or simply sitting outside watching the day go by, he carried with him a quiet grace and appreciation for life's simple blessings. He took great pride in coaching his children's sports teams, helping shape not only their lives but those of their friends and teammates. His home was always a place of warmth, welcome, and wisdom.

James was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. His voice carried the weight of thoughtfulness, love, and understanding. He had a rare gift for making those around him feel seen and valued, and his compassion left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Throughout his career, James worked tirelessly to provide for his family and to serve his community. He retired from Denison Independent School District, where he served faithfully as Maintenance and Transportation Supervisor. Not one to sit still, he went on to work with and retire from TAPS, where he again earned the respect and friendship of all who knew him.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Lelon and Jessie Daniel; his beloved wife, Betty; his son, Jimmy; his sister, Edith Janell Bone; and his brother, Donald Daniel.

He is survived by his daughter and pride and joy, Sherry Ragland and husband Joseph of Sherman, TX; brother Charles Daniel of Murphy,NC; sister June Collins; granddaughters Casey Borah of Bells, TX, and Brandy Marie of Colbert, OK; great-grandchildren Piper Bearden, Amy (Blaine) Bandy, Alexander Borah, Jesse Borah, and Killian Smith; and great-great-grandchildren Thomas McDougall and Evelynne Bandy. He is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his kindness and heart.
