Harold Dean
Speed, Sr
Nov 5, 1933 — Nov 9, 2023
Hendrix
Harold Dean Speed, a husband, father, grandpa, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023 at TMC hospital. He was proud to have celebrated his 90th birthday with family members a few days before.
Harold was born on November 5, 1933 and raised on a farm near Choctaw Creek. He attended primary school at Oak Ridge, a one room schoolhouse, then attended Denison High School and graduated from Savoy High School. He would walk about 5 miles to school each day and if it were a lucky day, he would get to catch a ride on the milk truck wagon.
Growing up around a lot of neighborhood children, Harold always loved to eat. He would always talk about going to Chester Nichols house and would tell his favorite thing at the meal was the "all time gravy." He loved food, especially buffets. If you ever went anywhere with Harold, he would always buy your lunch at HIS favorite restaurant, Golden Corral. He knew where every buffet was located.
Harold joined the US Army in 1954 and was awarded National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge in 1956. After returning home to Carpenter's Bluff, he married the girl next door, Anita June Boney, wife of 62 years. Anita worked for his family until they married and moved to the family farm in Savoy, Tx. They raised hogs and cattle which kept the family busy. Harold took a job at General Cable in Bonham and retired after 20 years. He and his family then moved to Hendrix, Ok to take over the Silver Dollar store that his dad purchased in 1949.
Lots has gone on at the Silver Dollar through the years. During winter months, Harold and his dad had a fur buying and tanning business through 1978. They ran a grocery store and restaurant where you could always visit with Harold and Anita while waiting on your burgers or pizzas. Harold enjoyed telling stories of his Colorado deer hunts in the Jeep, talking about football games, playing baseball or boxing stories. You also had to listen to a few jokes and he would always tell you to "never bet on another man's tricks."
You may also walk into the store to find all the tables filled with fishing lures. Harold and Anita spent many hours making lures, from making molds, pouring lead, painting lures, to putting spinners on or tying buck tail on hooks. You would always find them busy. He was a hard worker and he believed in keeping busy, but he also enjoyed playing hard as well.
Harold is survived by his wife, Anita Speed, his son, Harold Speed Jr., and his daughter, Joyce Maxwell and husband Rick of Dodd City, Tx. Harold has four grandchildren, Heather Porter and husband Seth of Hendrix, Cody Maxwell and wife Logan of Savoy, Callie Pittman and husband Dustin of Whitewright, and H D Speed of Denison; Harold enjoyed his great grandchildren: Lane, Landen, Caisley, Shepherd, Lizzie, Shelby and Hayden. He is survived by his sister JoAnn Bibby and husband Bill of Savoy, and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Lorene, and his brother Harvey and wife Sue Speed.
