Obituary

George Michael Kalmon was born on March 27, 1958, to Gene and Ethel Kalmon of Littleton, Colorado.

His early life was filled with adventure in the foothills of Colorado where he had the freedom to explore the outdoors with his four siblings.  At ten, he and his family moved to El Jebel and then on to Glenwood Springs a few years later.  There he spent an idyllic youth in the mountains, hunting, fishing, skiing, and hitting the hot springs pool as often as possible.  Through his dad, a home builder, George also learned the construction trades.  He and his brothers used their skills to help their dad build houses around Aspen and to build a barn on their property that's still there today.

George graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  He took a job logging oil wells with Gearhart Industries out of Abilene, Texas.  He transferred to Sherman, Texas and joined on with Morris Engineers, working as a civil engineer and surveyor.  He also served as city engineer for several municipalities in the area.  In the 1990's he left to start his own company and has worked for himself ever since. His work and his curiosity led him to discover the back roads and hidden gems wherever he was, and every new place his work brought him became home.

In 1986 George married Mary Fass and together had a daughter, Gigi, that same year.  George relished being a father and shared his interests with Gigi, taking her fishing, boating, and bike riding.  With his carpentry skills he built her many toys, including a rocking horse that his granddaughter plays on to this day.  As the years marched on, he continued pursuing old interests and developing new ones.  He water skied and fished, he rode hundreds of miles on his bicycle, he smoked meats and perfected his Southern cooking, he gardened, he tinkered on cars, and he dreamed up inventions, but all the while being a father was his first priority and favorite hobby.  George also held his faith close to heart and cared for his fellow man, evident in his many acts of service and kindness to those in need around him.  He regularly donated blood, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and helped strangers in need of a ride, a tow, or an odd job.

George is survived by his daughter, Georgianna (Gigi) Mendenhall; son-in-law, Daniel Mendenhall; granddaughter, Charlotte Mendenhall; father, Gene Kalmon; sister Betsy (Mark) Gutknecht; and three brothers, Dennis (Shiela) Kalmon, Jim Kalmon, and Mike (Tami) Kalmon.  He also leaves behind many more family members and friends who will miss him.  George is preceded in death by his brother, John Kalmon and mother, Ethel Kalmon.
