Obituary

Carlos Eugene Carter, 94, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024, in Whitesboro, Texas.
He was born in Athens, Alabama, on October 3, 1929, to William Philip Carter and Nona Loucile
Swanner Carter. Carlos had three younger siblings: Willie Nell, Philip Earl, and James Lerman.
The family moved to Texas when he was very young, and he attended public schools in Collin
County. He graduated from Wylie High School in 1947 and eventually earned a Bachelor's and
a Master's degree, both in Education, from North Texas State College in Denton. As of 1951,
Carlos was a high school principal and math teacher in several Texas public school districts:
McKinney, Iredell, Panhandle, Saginaw, Tyler, Whitesboro, and Anna. He retired from teaching
in 1987 after 36 years.

He met Clariece Moore in 1953 while both were students at North Texas. She was attending
summer school and he was commuting from McKinney to work on his Master's. The State of
Texas facilitated their courtship when they opened Highway 380 between Denton and McKinney.
He would meet "no more than three or four vehicles" on his Saturday commute! They were
married in Dallas on February 10, 1954. Through the years they shared a love of teaching as
well as camping and hiking in the mountains of Colorado. They were active members of Baptist
churches in the communities where they lived, and for many years they delivered Meals on
Wheels in McKinney and Sherman. After 62 years of marriage, Clariece passed away on
September 5, 2016. A year later Carlos met and married Lenora Marie Olinger in Sherman, and
they enjoyed more than 6 years of matrimony until her death in April 2024.

He is survived by his sister, Nell Jones of Celina; daughter, Carla Hawkins and husband, Frank
of Whitesboro; son, Danny Carter and wife, Holly of Sheridan, Wyoming; and daughter, Janet
Hawkins of Whitesboro. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren as well
as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and daughter, Linda Bailey.

The Carter family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the following for providing exceptional care to Carlos before his death: Pecan Point Assisted Living, Just Like Home Assisted Living, Alan McBride MD, Mark Smith DDS, Jeffrey Harris OD, Better Hearing
