Obituary

Annie Jewel Thompson Tarbet, age 89, of Sherman, Texas, passed peacefully from this life at her home on September 10, 2026.

Jewel was born on September 20, 1936, in Hopkins, Texas, to Rosco Howard and Ellen Lydia Clark.

On December 18, 1954, she married the love of her life, Bill Thompson, in Sherman, Texas. Together, they shared 52 years of marriage and raised four children. Bill and Jewel were truly a team, and throughout their life together, their family was always at the center of everything they did.

When their daughters played softball in the city league, Bill coached and Jewel kept the scorebook. But Jewel wasn't always on the sidelines. She also played second base on a women's city softball team that Bill coached. When their son began to play ball, Jewel and Bill were there to cheer him on. They bowled together in the same city league, traveled to tournaments, and simply enjoyed doing things together. They enjoyed that some of their children eventually began to bowl with them later when they were older. As the years passed and their children grew and had families of their own, Jewel's home remained a gathering place. There was always a standing invitation to come home for Sunday dinner. Jewel loved having her family around her, and a full house filled with noise, conversation, laughter, and activity was just the way she liked it.

Perhaps nothing brought Jewel greater joy than her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she knew, they were coming to visit, she always had something waiting for them. It might be cookies or something she had sewn especially for them, but there was always something—a simple way Jewel showed them just how much she loved having them near.

Jewel was also a talented seamstress and had a special love for quilting. She had both the patience and talent to carefully piece together beautiful quilts, making one for each of her children and grandchildren. Those quilts are more than something she made with her hands; they are lasting reminders of the love, time, and care she gave so freely to her family.

Jewel was a faithful member of the Howe church of Christ and loved her church family dearly. Her faith was an important part of her life, and the friendships and fellowship she shared with her brothers and sisters in Christ meant a great deal to her.

Jewel retired from Texas Instruments after 25 years of service. In retirement, she and Bill were able to travel throughout the United States, enjoying their time together and making many more memories along the way.

For Jewel, faith and family was not simply an important part of her life—it was the heart of it.

Jewel is survived by her four children, Debbie Soechting and husband Toby, Joanie Grady and husband Andy, Donna Thompson, and Steve Thompson and wife Dawnette; her seven grandchildren, Kelly Bagwell and husband James, Vince Grady, Dustin Soechting and wife Beth, Brandon Thompson and wife Lindsey, Preston Soechting and wife Emma, Jessie Brin, and Trinity Thompson; her seven great-grandchildren, Bodhi Bagwell, Kaden Thompson, Natalie Thompson, Ellie Soechting, Quentin Soechting, Vivian Soechting, and Arthur Soechting; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, Rosco Howard and Ellen Lydia Clark; her husband of 52 years, Bill Thompson; her sisters, Ola Mae Morris and Ruby James; and her brothers, David Clark and Willie Howard Clark.

Jewel's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Jill, Karla, and Mollie of Heart to Heart Hospice for the loving care they gave Jewel during some of her most difficult days. Their kindness, compassion, patience, and tenderness toward Jewel brought comfort not only to her, but also to her family. The love and care they showed her will always be remembered with deep gratitude.
