Obituary

Alvin Wesley Hamm, age 86, of Sherman, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13th, 2024.

Born on March 21st, 1938, in Brownwood, Texas, Alvin was a cherished husband, father, brother, friend, grandfather, and great grandfather. Known for his quick wit, unwavering faith in God, love for his country, and devotion to his family, Alvin touched the lives of all who knew him.

Alvin was a self-employed accountant who dedicated himself to the Sherman community, serving as a city councilman for 8 years and assistant mayor for 2 years. His acts of kindness and generosity were a testament to his compassionate nature, bringing him immense joy in helping others and making them feel loved, welcomed, and valued.

Alvin served in the US Army from 1962 - 1968 as staff sergeant. Some of that time was spent in Korea after the Korean War. When he was discharged, he had earned a number of commendations and achievements for good conduct as well as a marksman. He was proud to have served his country in his lifetime.

In his leisure time, Alvin found joy in physical challenges, participating in marathons, 5K races, and biking events. He completed over 177 races, with the Sherman Arts Fest 5K holding a special place in his heart due to friendships he cultivated within the running community.

Alvin was also a gifted musician who could beautifully play the piano by ear. His musical talents led him to serve as the Minister of Music at First Baptist Church for many years. Later, he continued to actively participate in the choir and provide heartfelt musical performances at weddings and funerals.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Bernita McLerran, of Sherman, Texas, whose unwavering strength, and care provided comfort throughout his journey with Alzheimer's. Together, they weathered every challenge with grace and resilience.

He is also survived by his loving brother David Hamm and wife Juel of Phoenix, Arizona, whose support, and understanding were a source of strength during difficult times. His sister, Melanie Miller, and parents, Alvin Hamm and Lucille Williams Hamm of Tucson, Arizona preceded him in death.

Alvin's legacy lives on through his cherished children: daughter Jill Remshardt and David Valentine, daughter Nancy and Ted Brinkley, and daughter Paige Hamm. Their steadfast devotion and care brought peace and joy to his heart.

Alvin's pride and joy extended to his beloved grandchildren: Maia, Alex, Nicole, Andrew, William, Catherine, Victoria, and David. Their visits and shared memories brought moments of happiness during his battle with Alzheimer's.

In addition to his grandchildren, Alvin was blessed with the presence of one great-grandchild, Bryan, whose laughter, and innocence brought warmth to his heart in the midst of his struggles.

A celebration of Alvin's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations for Alzheimer's research at Gladstone Institute: https://gladstone.org/make-a-gift, a cause close to Alvin's heart.
